Microdermabrasion (MDA)

Microdermabrasion (MDA) is a minimally invasive, clinically proven epidermal resurfacing procedure that uses a controlled mechanical exfoliation device — either fine abrasive crystals or a diamond-tipped wand — combined with a gentle vacuum suction to remove the stratum corneum (outermost layer of dead skin cells) from the epidermis. First introduced in 1985 as a gentler alternative to traditional dermabrasion and chemical peels, it has since become one of the top five most performed non-surgical cosmetic procedures globally.

As the abraded skin cells are removed, the body initiates its natural wound-healing response — stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis and accelerating the turnover of fresh, healthy epidermal cells. The result is skin that is visibly smoother, brighter, more even-toned, and significantly more receptive to skincare products immediately after each session.

Types of Microdermabrasion (MDA)

Diamond-Tip Microdermabrasion

Uses a handheld wand with a diamond-encrusted tip that gently abrades and exfoliates the skin while simultaneously vacuuming away the dead cells. No loose crystals involved — cleaner, safer, and more precise. The abrasion depth is controlled by varying suction pressure and how long the wand dwells on each area. Pre

Crystal Microdermabrasion

Propels a high-speed stream of ultra-fine aluminium oxide crystals (or sodium bicarbonate/sodium chloride) onto the skin surface through a pressurised wand, then immediately vacuums them back up along with the dislodged dead skin cells. The original microdermabrasion method — effective for oily, acne-prone skin and uneven pigmentation. Slightly more aggressive than diamond-tip.

Hydrodermabrasion

The most advanced evolution — uses water and customised serums (hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, antioxidants) simultaneously infused into the skin during the exfoliation process. Crystal-free and significantly gentler — combines hydradermabrasion with active ingredient delivery for immediate hydration, brightening, and glow. Th

Vacuum Dermabrasion (No-Crystal)

A crystal-free variation that relies primarily on controlled vacuum suction — using a specially designed pen-like nozzle to lift the skin, stimulate blood circulation, and provide deep pore extraction without any abrasive material. Particularly effective for removing blackheads, sebaceous filaments, and congested pores without any irritation. Ideal for reactive or highly sensitive skin types.

Step-by-step Procedure

Consultation & skin assessment

Your dermatologist or trained aesthetician evaluates your skin type, Fitzpatrick classification, skin concerns, and treatment history. Contact lenses, glasses, and jewellery are removed before the session. Protective goggles are provided to prevent crystal contact with the eyes.

Pre-treatment preparation (1 week before)

Avoid sun exposure, tanning creams, and waxing for one week before treatment. Stop using exfoliating creams and masks 3–5 days before. No retinoids or AHA/BHA products for 5 days prior. Arrive with a clean, makeup-free face — the clinic will cleanse your skin before starting.

Deep skin cleansing

The treatment area is thoroughly cleansed with a mild medical-grade cleanser to remove all traces of makeup, sunscreen, oils, and impurities. This ensures the microdermabrasion device can work directly and evenly on the skin surface without any barrier products interfering.

Microdermabrasion treatment

The handheld device is passed over the treatment area in smooth, even stroking movements. Suction pressure and speed are adjusted based on your skin sensitivity and tolerance. Most patients feel a mild scratching, sandpaper-like, or tingling sensation — similar to a cat's tongue on the skin. No anaesthesia is required. The procedure takes 30–45 minutes for a full face. Multiple passes may be performed over areas with deeper concerns.

Active serum infusion

Immediately after exfoliation, medical-grade serums — hyaluronic acid for hydration, vitamin C for brightening, niacinamide for pore refinement, or customised formulas — are applied to freshly prepped skin. With the stratum corneum removed, serum absorption is dramatically enhanced compared to normal skin. This is the nutritional phase of the treatment.

Soothing moisturiser & SPF application

A calming, fragrance-free moisturiser is applied to hydrate and soothe the freshly exfoliated skin. A broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen is applied before you leave — this is non-negotiable. Skin is temporarily more sensitive to UV damage after treatment. You may apply non-irritating makeup within a few hours if needed.
